Bench Wall Demolition: No Small Feat

Completely rehabilitating a 115-year-old tunnel is a massive undertaking. During the decommissioning phase earlier this summer, we removed approximately 24,000 linear feet of running rail, 12,000 linear feet of 3rd rail, 8,000 railroad ties, and 8,000 cubic yards of ballast.

Progress Unfolds in the East River Tunnel

Since the start of the long-term outage on May 23, the East River Tunnel Rehab Project has been steadily advancing through early, high-impact milestones. As detailed in past updates, we worked with our contractor to complete all decommissioning tasks followed by safely removing all assets from within the tunnel, clearing the way for major demolition activities.
ERT Rehab Project Completes Decommissioning Phase

Work recently wrapped up to decommission existing tunnel systems (i.e. power and signaling) and install temporary systems (i.e. power, lighting, and ventilation fans). The temporary systems are key to supporting work in the first tunnel (Line 2) over the next year.
East River Tunnel Rehab Project Remains on Schedule Following First Month of Work

This week marks one month since the long-term outage began for the East River Tunnel Rehab Project. The project is advancing on schedule, and to date there have been no significant unplanned service issues in the three remaining operational tunnel tubes affecting impacted Amtrak, LIRR, and NJT customers.
Amtrak Capital Delivery Leadership Tours ERT Rehab Project Progress

Amtrak Acting Senior Vice President of Capital Delivery Jim Short recently visited the East River Tunnel Rehab Project site for a first-hand look at the progress made by Amtrak and our contractor over the first few weeks of the long-term outage.
ERT Rehab Project Update: Decommissioning Begins

“Decommission” is now the word of the week. Before demolishing the existing tunnel systems in the 1st tunnel (Line 2) down to the concrete liner, the project team must decommission – or power off and remove from service – all the existing tunnel systems.
Amtrak Launches Historic Salvage Program

On Thursday, May 29, Amtrak joined Baltimore City Councilman John T. Bullock, community members from the Greater Rosemont and Midtown Edmondson neighborhoods, and several media outlets to kick off a new Historic Salvage Program at the historic Atlas Building on Edmondson Avenue.

On Monday, the project team successfully transitioned work into Line 2, right on schedule.
East River Tunnel Rehabilitation Project Officially Underway

Over the weekend, Amtrak crews kicked off the first long-term track outage in support of the East River Tunnel Rehabilitation Project (ERT Rehab), a critical infrastructure investment that will restore the two tunnel tubes damaged by Superstorm Sandy (Line 1 & Line 2). This is Amtrak’s largest planned outage in recent history, an important undertaking planned in coordination with our partners over several years.
