Amtrak is preparing to launch 28 made-in-America next-generation high-speed trains from Alstom that will soon replace the current fleet on Amtrak’s premium Acela service.

Building on Amtrak’s expertise as the only high-speed rail operator in the U.S., and Alstom’s record of delivering world-class, proven, high-speed trainsets – Amtrak and Alstom have partnered to introduce the NextGen Acela.

The contract is part of a $2.35 billion investment in the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor (NEC) as part of a multifaceted modernization program to renew and expand Acela service. Over 180 suppliers in 29 states supplied NextGen Acela’s components, with 95% of components made in America. Over 1,300 workers were dedicated to the trainset’s assembly, and more than 10,000 jobs supported manufacturing of the trainset nationwide (Source: Jobs supporting manufacturing estimates includes direct, indirect, and induced jobs estimated per the Council of Economic Advisers model).

NextGen Acela trains offer an elevated experience, with all the amenities that today’s travelers expect plus everything you need to be productive: free, high-speed, 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, as well as individual USB ports, power outlets and reading light. With 25% more seats, more daily departures, limited stops, and the opportunity to select your seat before travel, there’s never been a better way to travel in the Northeast.

The NextGen Acela trainsets will operate at a top speed of 160 mph vs. today’s fleet, which operates at a top speed of 150 mph.

The NextGen Acela fleet will enter service soon.
