The New York Penn Station facility, originally built in 1910 and reconfigured underground in the 1960s, was designed for a different era of passenger rail service and a volume of daily travelers well below the number using the station today. As the owner of this essential national asset, Amtrak is working with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, and its regional partners to transform New York Penn Station into a modern, iconic transportation hub, enhancing the station’s safety, functionality, and overall customer experience. In April 2025, U.S. DOT and Secretary Duffy announced Amtrak will lead the transformation of New York Penn Station. Click here to learn more.
