Moynihan Train Hall expands the nation’s busiest train station, New York Penn Station, into the historic James A. Farley Post Office building to relieve crowding and improve passenger experience. The Farley Post Office building sits across 8th Avenue from Penn Station and was designed by the same architecture firm, McKim, Mead, and White, as the original, iconic Pennsylvania Station.
Moynihan Train Hall offers enhanced passenger facilities for Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road riders, all within a grand Train Hall featuring a sky lit atrium approximately the size of the Grand Central Terminal’s Main Concourse. In concert with the forthcoming renovation of Penn Station that will better serve both intercity and commuter rail passengers, expansion of Amtrak’s passenger services into Moynihan Train Hall relieves existing station crowding and improves passenger experience.
Moynihan Train Hall was constructed in two phases. Phase I, totally reimagined Penn Station’s West End Concourse, providing new stairs and elevators to platforms, as well as a much wider, well-lit passenger circulation space. In addition, several new train information boards and escalators connect customers to a modern new entrance across 8th Avenue from Penn Station.
Phase II created Moynihan Train Hall, a world-class intercity and commuter passenger boarding concourse for Amtrak and MTA Long Island Rail Road passengers. The facility, combining the grandeur of the original Pennsylvania Station with state-of-the-art technologies and customer amenities, provides more spacious boarding conditions for Amtrak’s intercity passengers and MTA Long Island Rail Road’s commuter rail passengers.
Customer amenities include a dramatically larger boarding concourse that bathes in sunlight from the 92-foot-high skylights; combined ticketing and baggage services; a well-appointed Metropolitan Lounge; a reserved customer waiting room with restrooms accessible only to ticketed customers; and premium retail and food shops.
Moynihan Train Hall is open to the public daily from 5am to 1am. Between 1am and 5am, all Amtrak operations are handled at New York Penn Station across 8th Avenue, including baggage and Red Cap services, as well as access to platforms.
