Work recently wrapped up to decommission existing tunnel systems (i.e. power and signaling) and install temporary systems (i.e. power, lighting, and ventilation fans). The temporary systems are key to supporting work in the first tunnel (Line 2) over the next year.

Now the next phase has begun, with demolition of the existing tunnel underway, starting with removal of the tracks (also called “running rails”). The demolition phase will continue into the fall, including removal of the concrete benchwalls, which provide emergency access and store power and signal cables. This will occur simultaneously with tunnel liner state-of-good-repair work, which will reinforce the tunnel for years to come.
