The Susquehanna River Bridge Project is continuing to progress, with wildlife protection and surveying work having started this summer.

Recent Progress

Wildlife Protection: In coordination with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, wildlife protection fencing has been installed throughout the project area. Please reach out to SRBProject@amtrak.com or 844-SUS-RAIL with any questions or concerns.

Ongoing Maintenance

Water Resource Management: Crews are continuing work at the Simon’s Run wetland and stream mitigation site in Harford County.

Existing Bridge: Amtrak will continue performing regular inspections and maintenance along and adjacent to the existing bridge

Community Engagement

On April 25, 2026, Amtrak and the project team volunteered at the annual River Sweep in the Town of Perryville. This event is hosted by the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway (LSHG) in celebration of Earth Week. The team also participated in the June 5, 2026 Havre de Grace First Friday event. Amtrak was joined by an Operation Lifesaver representative from the Maryland Department of Transportation to talk about the importance of railroad safety.

Recently Asked Question

Q: Is it true a small barge struck the bridge earlier this month?

A: Yes, Amtrak and the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed a small barge struck the bridge on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Inspection crews responded and found no structural damage to the bridge itself, but there was minimal damage to the wood surrounding the bridge pier. Train service over the bridge was paused, yet resumed after two hours, with residual delays throughout the day. This was unrelated to the project. The Susquehanna River Bridge Project will feature a wider navigation channel and a new fender to protect the piers.
