B&P Railroad Histories Initiative

Amtrak is gathering community stories and historic photos for a future display in the new West Baltimore MARC Station.

As part of the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program, Amtrak’s design team is compiling historic information and photographs to display in the new West Baltimore MARC Station to show how important railroads have been to the City of Baltimore, and, in particular, West Baltimore. These materials will be used to create mural displays in each of the two track-level waiting areas of the new West Baltimore MARC Station.

Amtrak is seeking the following:

Stories of how the railroad played a role in the lives of individuals and families that have lived or worked in West Baltimore

Examples include:

  • Personal experience working for the railroad such as the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak, or MARC);
  • Use of the railroad for personal travel or commuting; and/or
  • Working in one of the many industries that relied on the railroads such as the American Ice Company, Ward Baking Company, Acme Storage, Atlas Storage Warehouse, the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Company, Maryland Lumber Company, the Fox Packing Company, the A &P Grocery Warehouse, or J.H. Filbert, Inc.

Photos of people using the railroad to participate in the residential, business, and industrial life of the community. Photos representing close ties to the railroad (either as a passenger or employee) are of special interest.

Email bptunnel@amtrak.com with subject line “MARC History Display” and an Amtrak representative will set up a time to discuss.

All participants must provide written consent allowing Amtrak to use their donated materials, whether or not those materials appear in the final display.
